"A new chosen one: Ryan Kiera Armstrong is the next vampire slayer in Buffy reboot"/ "Sarah Michelle Gellar defends reboots: 'It means that your work resonates'"

May 16, 2025 "A new chosen one: Ryan Kiera Armstrong is the next vampire slayer in Buffy reboot": Today I found this article by Natalie Stechyson on CBC:

She got her start as little Minnie May Barry on Netflix's Anne With An E, made a name for herself in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, but soon you'll know her as the next vampire slayer.

Actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong has just been cast in the lead role

alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar in the pilot for Hulu's reboot of the wildly popular late '90s television series Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Gellar, the original show's Buffy, made the announcement on Instagram Thursday, in which she also revealed the news to 15-year-old Armstrong.

"How do you feel about helping me save the world?" Gellar asked Armstrong in the video.

"Good," Armstrong replied tearfully.

Then, in a reference to the opening narration of the original series, that, "In every generation, there is a chosen one," Gellar asked, "Do you want to be my chosen one?"

Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997 and ran through 2003. Its title character battled vampires, demons and other dark forces in the fictional California city of Sunnydale while navigating everyday teenage struggles.

Multiple media reported in February that a reboot was in the works, and that streaming service Hulu had ordered the pilot.

On Thursday, Hulu shared Gellar's reel on its own Instagram page, as well as in its stories, where it added, "Welcome to New Sunnydale, Ryan."

The original broke the mould for traditional television series.

As CBC Ideas reported on the show's 20th anniversary in 2017

many cultural critics believe Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a major influence on a generation of television production

with its long, sweeping narrative arcs

and deep character development

set against a background of contemporary social anxieties and tensions.

What we know about the reboot

Gellar is an executive producer of the so-far-untitled Buffyverse project, Deadline reports, and will also reprise her role as Buffy Summers.

Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), is directing the pilot, which is written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.

Armstrong will play this generation's slayer. The U.S. actor started her career on the Anne of Green Gables-based Anne with an E, where she played Diana Barry's younger sister.

She's known for her roles in FirestarterAmerican Horror StoryThe Lowdown, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

On Instagram, Gellar wrote that she was impressed with Armstrong from the beginning.

"From the moment I saw Ryan's audition,

I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side.

To have that kind of emotional intelligence,

and talent,

at such a young age is truly a gift.

The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room,"

Gellar wrote.

Writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman added that they were "overjoyed" with the choice of Armstrong in the role.

"She absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one," they said in the Instagram video.

In her own Instagram postArmstrong wrote Thursday that she was "beyond thankful and excited."

"I'm still in so much shock and disbelief," she added.

My opinion: When I watched the Instagram clip of Gellar telling Armstrong she got the role, she was crying, and happy and excited about it.

Aww...

Sept. 4, 2025 "Sarah Michelle Gellar defends reboots: 'It means that your work resonates'": Today I found this article by Raechal Shewfelt on Entertainment Weekly and Yahoo:

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who's worked on reboots to '90s favorites I Know What You Did Last Summer and Buffy the Vampire Slayer this year, says the opportunity to return to her former roles is an honor.

"I've been fortunate enough that I've had work

that people remember from all different times,

and as an actor, you just hope you do work that not just stands the test of time

(and) that people still remember,

but they still enjoy,"

Gellar tells USA Today in an interview published Thursday.

"If your art that you've created is still meaningful

and also as the world changes that it still has emotional resonance to the fans,

that's all we could ever ask for."

She adds, "It means that your work resonates.

And that people are still wanting more from a performance you made that many years ago."

Gellar, 48, should know. For starters, in July, she made a eerie cameo in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer, as her deceased character from the original, Helen Shivers. The original horror movie, which costarred Gellar's future husband, Freddie Prinze Jr.Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Ryan Phillippe came out in 1997. It was about a group of friends who accidentally hit someone with a car later being stalked by someone who knows their secret.

Then, in August, Gellar shared video on social media that showed her at a gym, training to reprise her role as Buffy Summers on a new TV series. It's a part she originally played for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003. While the premiere date for the new show has not been released, it's been announced that actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong will be the new star.

Gellar did see a downside to reboots, though.

As the actress who's also known for her parts in Cruel Intentions and TV's All My Children sees it,

"people are really hard on" them,

although they "never get mad every time … someone does a new adaptation of Shakespeare or Brontë or any of the classics.

At the end of the day, there's only so many stories in the world and they all sort of are derivatives."

The trick is to make them close enough to the old thing without making it a straight-up repeat.

"I think as long as they're good and it's not just a rehashing," Gellar tells the newspaper. "As long as the work is put in, it's all about the DNA.

If you can capture the DNA of an original, I think you're golden."

Sept. 5, 2025 My opinion: I am happy and excited for this show reboot.  I will definitely check it out.  I watched this show starting season 4 and watched till season 7.  I watched starting 14 - 17 yrs old.

I loved the action and fight scenes.

I also had a big crush on Spike (James Marsters.)

This is from my Mar. 2020 blog post:

Quickbooks/ How to make decisions/ Tracy giving away her magazine clippings (Work from Home Part 1)

Tracy giving away her magazine clippings: My sister gave me all her magazines like 24 issues a year in 2001.  By 2002 (gr. 11), I had become close friends with Tamara.  She likes Buffy and got really into it in season 6.  We watched and talked about the show all the time.  It was also on syndication on Space.  (Now it's called Sci-fi Channel).

I gave her one Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy) and she was so happy.

Tamara: Where did you get this?
Tracy: Seventeen magazine Dec. 2000.
Tamara: Thank you so much.

Then later I gave her one more and she was so happy.

Tamara: Where did you get this?
Tracy: YM magazine May 2001.
Tamara: Thank you so much.  I have some O-town posters I could give you.
Tracy: No, that's okay, I don't really like them.

Tamara gives me this confused look.
Tamara: But last year, weren't you all "Ahhh O-town!"
Tracy: Oh yeah, I was, you remembered.

Then months later in gr. 12, I gave her all my Buffy clippings.  They were on my wall before and I like Buffy and all, but Tamara likes them more so I gave them all to her.

I was way more obsessed with Buffy in season 4-6.  I started watching the show in season 4.

I cut up all my magazines (from 1996-2003) and gave her everything related to Buffy.  The show was on the 7th and last season.  She was so happy and excited.  She appreciated these way more than I do.

I then gave all my friends magazine clippings of other celebrities they like.

Rusty: Limp Bizkit, No Doubt, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Eminem

April: Simple Plan

Chelsea: Ryan Phillippe

TV and movie comparisons:

TV shows where the lead character is a woman who fights: As a teen and early 20s, I love to watch action TV shows and movies.

I still like that, but I'm more interested in solving mysteries.

Nikita:

"Condemned to death for a vicious crime she didn't commit, Nikita reluctantly chooses to live as a secret government assassin whose life is controlled by a clandestine anti-terrorist organization Section One."

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118379/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_5_tt_5_nm_3_in_0_q_nikita

My opinion: I saw some of the original in 2000 -2001 when I was 15 and 16 yrs old.  This was average.

Nikita (reboot):

"A rogue assassin returns to take down the secret organization that trained her."

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1592154/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_5_nm_3_in_0_q_nikita

My opinion:  I watched the pilot and a few episodes when it first came out in 2010.  I was 25 yrs old.  I thought this was average.  I didn't really watch more of this because I wasn't that interested in it.

This was also before DVRs are available, and where I can record a lot of TV shows and watch them when I want.  Of course, there are VHS tapes and VCRs, but I didn't really use them.

I was busy:

1. I was working at my Hotel Restaurant job.

2. I was looking for an office job.

3. I was watching all my other shows like The Mentalist and Desperate Housewives.

4. I was reading the news.

I would like to watch more of the series on some streaming platform.

There are some of you who are reading this and are like: "You watch so many TV shows where the lead character is a woman who fights, but you didn't watch all of the Nikita reboot?

recorded these TV shows on my DVR.  I watched one episode a day for a couple of weeks:

2015:

Blindspot:

"Jane Doe is found in Times Square with no memory and mysterious tattoos on her body."

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4474344/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_in_0_q_blindspt

My opinion:  I watched the whole series.  I liked it overall.

Quantico:

"A look at the lives of young FBI recruits training at the Quantico base in Virginia when one of them is suspected of being a sleeper terrorist."

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4428122/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_quantico

My opinion: I watched the whole series.  I liked it overall.

I'll throw this one in too:

I want a reboot of my other shows I watched as a teen about the lead character who is a woman who fights:

Dark Angel:

"A group of genetically-enhanced children escape from a lab project. Years later we meet Max, one of the escapees who now works for a messenger service in the post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest."

My opinion: I have all 2 seasons on DVD.  My friend Leslie and I loved the show.

We both also disliked season 2 and thought the show "jumped the shark" meaning as it "went bad."  Also on the "Jump the Shark" website, the votes were for this show:

1. Never jumped the shark

2. Season 2

https://www.reddit.com/r/Xennials/comments/121j25g/jump_the_shark_website/

Alias:

"Sydney Bristow agrees to become an international spy for a secret branch of the CIA. The secrecy complicates her social and love lives, but it's nothing compared to what happens when she finds out her employer has no ties to the CIA."

My opinion: I have the first 2 seasons on DVD.  I saw the first 3 seasons.  I missed some episodes around season 4 and 5.  I did watch the season 5/ series finale.
