spring 2018 TV season (Part 2)/ "Special needs student lands 2 dates to senior prom after mom's Facebook video"

May 13, 2019 McMafia:

"Alex Godman, the English-raised son of Russian mafia exiles, has spent his life trying to escape the shadow of their past, building his own legitimate business and forging a life with his girlfriend, Rebecca. But when a murder unearths his family's past, Alex is drawn into the criminal underworld where he must confront his values to protect those he loves."

Pros:

1. There was a good opening of a car driving into a tunnel.  A motorbike drives by it and plants a bomb.  The car blows up.

2. The lead actor James Norton plays Alex Godman.  He is a good actor and plays a likable character.

3. 40 min in there is a plot twist.  There is a crazy fight scene.

4. The writing is good with drama, conflict, and tension.

5. There is good acting as the characters deal with a death.

6. It is realistic.  After Alex almost gets killed, he takes self- defense.

Why does Alex work for a bad guy?  It's for revenge: To avenge someone's death and to protect his family.

Cons: None.

My opinion: The pilot was good and then I never watched it again.  I just wasn't that interested in it.

The Terror:

"In 1848, two real life warships, HMS Terror and HMS Erebus, sent on a Royal Naval expedition to find the treacherous Northwest Passage become trapped in ice near Arctic and face starvation, mutiny, cannibalism and a demonic polar bear."

Pros:

1. It was a good production.  There are nice sets in the ship.  It looks well-produced.

2. There are a few parts that are exciting and dangerous.

3. Good acting.

Cons:

1. This is the most boring pilot I have ever seen.  The second most boring pilot I ever saw was Star Trek: Discovery.

My opinion: The pilot was average and then I never watched it again because it was so boring.

James Cameron: Story of Science Fiction:

"An exploration into the science fiction genre, with some of the greatest pioneers of the genre."

Pros:

1. They interview all the big actors like Keanu Reeves, Sigourney Weaver, etc.

They also talk to writers, directors, and producers.

There are also college professors, movie critics, journalists, and magazine writers, and physicists talking about it.

You can click on the link to know who they all are.

2. It is a very smart and in-depth discussion about each sci-fi topic.

On the episode "Aliens": aliens provide what aliens tach humans about themselves.

Language relates to thought: habits of speech relates to habits of thought.

My opinion: I'm going to put that in my inspirational quotes.

Cons: None.

My opinion: I watched all 6 episodes.

May 18, 2019 Absentia: This pilot came out in Jan. 2018.  I got to watch this on Global.  They aired only the pilot.

After being declared dead in absentia, an FBI agent must reclaim her family, identity and innocence when she finds herself the prime suspect in a string of murders.

Pros:

1. The cast:

Stana Katic (Det. Kate Beckett from Castle) is the lead Emily who was supposedly dead.  There is good acting on her part.

Patrick Heusinger who plays Emily's husband/ FBI agent Nick.

The other actors are average.

2. There is a good opening with Emily and Nick with their kid Flynn playing in home videos.  There is a sharp contrast as Emily is being beaten and tortured.

3. The writing is good with lots of drama, conflict, and tension.  This is a crazy idea and storyline of an FBI agent who is supposedly dead, and then not dead 6 yrs later.

Nick gets married to another woman and raises Flynn with her.  He gets a mysterious call to save Emily.

It is exciting and suspenseful.  It is intense and sad.

There is lots of action.

It was realistic when Emily gets to the hospital and the media is there and at Nick's home.

It poses good questions and the mystery: Who kidnapped Emily?

Emily doesn't remember much.  Will she get her memory back?

4. There is a good surprise at the end.

Spoiler alert: The dead body was found, and the killer's DNA is Emily.

Cons:

1. This is a mild con, and not until Jul. 2018 I thought about it: Of course Emily's husband Nick has to be an FBI agent.  The character has to be her equal in like professionally, mentally and physically fit.

Also he has to be an FBI agent so he can be involved in the story through his job.  If he was an engineer, it's a good job, but no effect on character's lives and not much of a story.

There are some shows where characters later become cops, but it doesn't seem as contrived.

Ex. The Vampire Diaries: Matt later does become a cop.  The character can then have more access around town and help more people.  However, I personally see the character as a good fit for the job.

The Detail: Stevie's husband was not a cop at all.  I forgot what his job was.

Fiona had an ex-husband, and he was in law enforcement.  He wasn't a cop though.  I can't remember.

Jackie's boyfriend was a lawyer.

Comparisons:

A character who was supposedly dead, but then years later is found alive.  All the characters have to readjust to it:

Alias: Spoiler alert for season 2 finale: Sydney wakes up and she was missing for 2 yrs.

The Family (TV show in 2016): The character Adam went missing when he was a kid.  10 yrs later he was found alive.

Arrow: The series was about Oliver who was supposedly dead for 5 yrs and found alive.

A character who has no memory of what happened:

Blindspot: The series began with Jane Doe waking up in in Times Square covered in tattoos and she has no memory.

Castle: Castle gets kidnapped and he has no memory of what happened when he went missing.

My opinion: The pilot was good, and then I never watched it again.  I can't gain access to it because it's on Showcase.  I would watch it by recording all the episodes and watch it all in one week.

If you like Criminal Minds, mysteries, and law enforcement shows, you'll like this.

Jun. 3, 2019 Pure: Today I was reading the Star Metro and it says this show is on Super Channel in Canada and WGN in the US.  I checked on channel 143 on Telus because it's the CW.  The CW is like WGN.  It's not on tonight.

I checked CBC and it's not on tonight either.

Initially, Pure was not renewed for a second season;[10][11] however, in April 2018 the show was picked up by Super Channel, CBC, Hulu, and WGN America for a season two with six episodes, set to premiere in 2019.[12][13] The series is scheduled to debut on WGN America on May 28, 2019.[14]

Jun. 5, 2019: This week I have been checking out pilots of these new shows.

The Red Line: It came out in Apr. 2019 and I saw the first 2 episodes.  It was good with the acting and writing.  It was intense so I maybe watching it later.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9564862/?ref_=rvi_tt

The InBetween: I saw the pilot and it was intense.  It's a cop drama and it's supernatural too.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7861612/?ref_=rvi_tt

Blood and Treasure: I saw the first 2 episodes and it's really fun to watch.  It reminds me of Whiskey Cavelier because it is a man and a woman running around the world.

My week:

Jun. 3, 2019 FTD flower company closing:

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — The century old flower company FTD is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following a rough Valentine's Day and will break the business into pieces.

Originally called the Florists Telegraph Delivery Association, FTD has failed to turn a profit in four years.

FTD Co. said Monday that it's sold its North America and Latin America businesses, including ProFlowers, to an affiliate of Nexus Capital for $95 million. It sold its Interflora business in the U.K. to a subsidiary of The Wonderful Company for $59.5 million.
https://ca.yahoo.com/finance/news/ftd-founded-100-years-swipe-162330076.html

My opinion: I can't remember if I heard of this company before.  I don't care about flowers.  I'm writing about this because it's about business.  Flower shops are hardly in the news about it closing down.  It's usually been clothing and department stores.

Jun. 5, 2019 "Special needs student lands 2 dates to senior prom after mom's Facebook video":

Two young men escorted a special-needs high school student to prom when her mother requested someone “special” on Facebook.
Gabby Horner-Shepherd has Partial Trisomy 13, a chromosomal disorder with a reported 90 percent mortality rate before the age of 1. “When Gabby was born, the doctor opened a medical textbook and showed me a child autopsy, his only photo of a patient,” Shannon Horner-Shepherd tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “Gabby was declared ‘incompatible with life.’”
At 21, Gabby is non-verbal and can display aggressive behavior. But she is also sweet and enthusiastic and enjoys zip-lining and hockey. With a ten-person team, including two educational assistants, she recently completed high school in her town of Port Dover, Ontario.
Shannon wanted her daughter to experience her June 1st prom. “My goal for Gabby is, her life should look as close as possible to a typical person,” the single mom of four, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “She's sparkly and she loves to dance.”
Two weeks ago, Shannon did “something crazy” and found her daughter a prom date by making a video for Facebook. “My name is Gabby, I’m 21 years old, and I need a prom date,” Shannon spoke for Gabby in the video. “I need someone special who is willing to take me, because I have special needs.”
“My life’s mission since she came into this world 21 years ago has been to make sure that she is remembered by everyone she meets so that when the day comes that she’s no longer on this earth she has left an imprint on their souls,” wrote Shannon. “I would LOVE this prom to be one of those times where she is remembered by everyone whose lives she has touched in high school. And to truly make it the BEST NIGHT EVER for Gabby!”

One was a Saint Catharines, Ontario student named Zack Bowman, 21. “I respected Shannon and Gabby’s courage too much to ignore the post,” Bowman, who plays ice hockey at Brock University, tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
Although Bowman had never met Gabby or Shannon before, he said, “It felt like fate.”
But Gabby had some choices — Jeremy Renton, a local police constable who coaches Gabby’s special-needs sledge hockey team, was also interested. “There’s no way I would let this girl go to prom alone,” Renton, 30, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I asked Shannon if I could come too.”
On prom night, both men picked up Gabby — Renton in full uniform and Bowman wearing a gray suit and carrying a floral corsage and matching boutonnieres for both men. Gabby wore a gray dress with blue beading and a taffeta skirt.
“When Gabby came outside, she lit up like a Christmas tree,” Shannon tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

Nice, handsome, sweet GENTLEMEN stepping up to the plate. Total package. Hope Gabby had fun, she looked pretty.

Jun. 6, 2019 "Man opens safe locked for 40 yrs on first try":

A man has spoken of his "total disbelief" after opening a safe that had been locked for 40 years on his first try.

Canadian Stephen Mills went to Alberta's Vermilion Heritage Museum last month.

One of its attractions is a 2,000lb (907kg) safe that had not been opened since the late 1970s.

While being shown round by guide Tom Kibblewhite, Mr Mills decided to have a go at opening it "for a laugh".

Noticing the dial numbers ran from zero to 60, he decided to try 20-40-60.

"I cracked it, it opened, and it was just total disbelief," he told CBC Edmonton.
Sadly, the safe was not full of cold, hard cash.
It contained an old pay sheet and part of a restaurant order pad dating from the late 1970s.
The pad included receipts for a mushroom burger for C$1.50 (59p) and a package of cigarettes for C$1.00 (40p).

Jun. 7, 2019 "17 yr old with special needs is a flight attendant":

17-year-old Shantell "Shannie" Pooser, who was born with a heart defect and a series of terminal airway defects, has spent a lot of her time flying back and forth between Denmark, South Carolina to Cincinnati Children's Hospital. As a result, she developed a love for flying and became inspired to become a flight attendant.

"So far, we've been on over 57 (flights). That's including the connecting flights, as well, too," Shannie's mother Deanna Miller-Berry told WIS 10 News. "She saw the flight attendant, and she was like, ‘Mommy, I want to be a flight attendant.'"

"German nurse convicted of killing 85 patients": Today I found this article by Melissa Eddy in the Star Metro:

OLDENBURG, Germany — A former nurse who confessed to killing more than four dozen patients in Germany was found guilty Thursday of murdering 85 and was sentenced to life in prison, with the judge calling the scope of his crimes “incomprehensible.”

The presiding judge, Sebastian Bührmann, had emphasized that the purpose of the trial went beyond a determination of guilt: It was to try to find answers about how and why the patients had died. But he acknowledged that in 15 other cases, the court had failed to find enough evidence to support a murder conviction.

“Despite all of our attempts, we could only lift part of the fog that hangs over this trial,” the judge said. “That fills us with a certain sadness.”

Högel had been accused of administering overdoses of drugs that caused cardiac arrest so that he could try to revive patients heroically.

My opinion: By being a doctor or any health care professional is a very helpful and meaningful career.  Being a doctor, nurse, paramedic, is kind of like being a hero already.

"Son of country singer Granger Smith dies after accident":

NASHVILLE — Country singer Granger Smith says that his youngest son, River Kelly Smith, has died after an undisclosed accident.

In a statement put out Thursday through his label, Smith said that after doctors were unable to revive the 3-year-old, the family decided to donate his organs to other children.

Jun. 2, 2019 Post Secret:
My opinion: This is kind of unintentional, but I watch TV shows that deal with death like the above show I wrote about The Inbetween.  I watch A Million Little Things and it's about a man who commits suicide all and his friends and family have to deal with it.  I also watch Mary Kills People about a doctor who is part of a medically assisted suicide side job.

Then you read the news and there's death.

Jun. 9, 2019 Norquest college programs: I research some college programs this past week.
