ABC is making some changes to its lineup following the resolution of the writers strike.

Comedy Home Economics has been canceled after three seasons, and new drama High Potential has been moved to fall 2024.

ABC still has to make decisions on a renewal for The Rookie: Feds and the status of The Good Lawyer, a backdoor-pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor. 

It passed on four of its pilots in June: 

Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders 

and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, 

as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie,

 and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

Home Economics, which stars Topher Grace and comes from Michael Colton and John Aboud, ran from 2021-23 on ABC. It was on the bubble for a renewal and there had been some hope that it could return after the Disney-owned network extended the cast options beyond the June 30 deadline.

It is produced by Lionsgate and ABC Signature.

The series, inspired by Colton’s real-life experiences, documents the uncomfortable yet heartwarming relationships of three siblings in very different situations: one in the ultra-rich, one in the middle class and one scraping by.

It also stars Caitlin McGee, Jimmy Tatro, Karla Souza, Sasheer Zamata, Shiloh Bearman, Jordyn Curet, Chloe Jo Rountree and JeCobi Swain.

Colton and Aboud serve as executive producers alongside Grace and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company, whose Jason Wang co-executive produces along with Tucker Cawley and Julieanne Smolinski. Dean Holland directed the pilot and multiple episodes and also serves as an executive producer. 

High Potential, which comes from Drew Goddard and is based on the popular French detective series HIP (High Intellectual Potential), was picked up to series in May and was set to launch in the 2023-24 season.

However, delays from the writers and actors strike meant that wasn’t possible.

High Potential, from ABC Signature, follows Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), a single mom with three kids and an exceptional mind, who helps solve an unsolvable crime when she rearranges some evidence during her shift as a cleaner for the police department. 

When they discover she has a knack for putting things in order because of her high intellectual potential, she is brought on as a consultant to work with a by-the-book seasoned detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), and together they form an unusual and unstoppable team.

The series also stars Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb and Judy Reyes.

Goddard and Sarah Esberg executive produce for Goddard Textiles. Rob Thomas serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Dan Etheridge of Spondoolie Productions, as well as Pierre Laugier and Anthony Lancret of Itinéraire Productions, a UGC company and Jean Nainchrik of Septembre Productions, a Mediawan Company. Alethea Jones is director and executive producer. Kaitlin Olson serves as producer.

Flatch is no longer a welcoming place.

Fox has canceled comedy Welcome To Flatch after two seasons.

“While audience response was not as strong as we had hoped, we were thrilled with the creativity of the enormously talented Jenny Bicks and Paul Feig, as well as the outstanding, dedicated cast and crew they assembled. We look forward to collaborating with them again in the future and are thankful for all of our partners at Lionsgate, Jenny’s Perkins Street Productions, Paul’s Feigco Entertainment, BBC Studios’ Angie Stephenson, and Charlie Cooper and Daisy May Cooper,” a Fox spokesperson said.

It’s not a surprise given that the U.S. remake of cult British comedy This Country was on the bubble.

The series followed a documentary crew that sets out to explore the lives of residents in the small American town of Flatch.

It starred Holmes, who plays Kelly Mallet, Sam Straley, who plays Shrub Mallett, Sean William Scott, who plays Father Joe, Aya Cash as Cheryl Peterson, Justin Linville as Mickey St. Jean, Taylor Ortega as Nadine Garcia-Parney and Krystal Smith as Big Mandy.

The series was produced by Lionsgate, BBC Studios’ LA production arm and Fox Entertainment with Bicks as showrunner. She exec produces via her Perkins Street Productions shingle alongside Feig, via his Feigco Entertainment, BBC Studios’ Angie Stephenson and Charlie Cooper and Daisy May Cooper, who created the original BBC series.

In May, Michael Thorn, President of Scripted Programming, Fox Entertainment told Deadline that it was “taking a step back on our live action comedy”.

“We’re still talking about [Welcome To Flatch]. But I think as we wait for the strike to end we’re going to look at our development, and Welcome To Flatch and make the best decision for that comedy goal… and see where we stand. I think we’ll have some news as soon as the as soon as the strikeouts,” he said at the time.
